OUTER WORLD

  1. PEAK OIL (valuable statements for general publc)
    - Cheap distribution is perceived over the true cost
    - 43% of world fuel consumption
    - Oil goes into everything - food, fertilisers, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, packaging, clothes, transport
    - 21% on UK food - 10 calories used to produce 1 calorie of food
    - 25-40 years between oil discovery and production - discovery peak normally 30 years behind production peak
    - Energy returns on energy invested (EROI)
    - Demand outstrips supply - for every 1 barrel produced, 5-6 are used in the UK alone
    - Total swap to renewable energy sources with current lifestyle - only provide ~6% requirements - MUST change lifestyle
    - Hubbert's peak
    - Variation in when Peak Oil actually is according to diffferent sources - between 2007 and 2020
  2. CLIMATE CHANGE
    - Caused by increased Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere --> greenhouse effect
    - Use of all fossil fuels releases C02 - esp coal - will still increase even with proposed 'carbon capture'
    - Current lifestyle fuels climate change every day - only way to reduce is to reduce impact of lifestyle

    a) SCARCITY

    - If you want it you can have it
    - The resources are ours to use
    - "God gave men dominion of the Earth"

    d) POWER=SECURITY
    - Hard/manual work is bad

    - All of us are leaders

    - More innovative -get people moving around in different groups, speaking to different people, articulating schpiel more!

    - Realistically and honestly assess levels of commitment from each individual and strengthen group from there

    b) - if you are not learning or contributing - move on to other group
    - A long period of events - eg - TTT had a 9 month event plan
    - Bring in natural supporters first
    - More social stuff as group
    - More group workshops - eg - joanna macy, presentations, visioning - get on same page
    - Small things in between big events to keep the work 'transition' buzzing
    - Read the field more and correlate events as such
    - Strengthen core group before budding out - then have a stronger unity on the outer world
    - Involve already existing local groups - LOGO,
    - Support TTH! and TL (TTH have asked a member of TTL to come and chat)
